Terms of Use

The rules of the platform, in the plainest language we can manage. Where a clause matters to your points or your data, it is written out rather than referenced.

⚠️
This is a trial platform and it uses play money. Balances are points. They are not currency, they cannot be bought, sold, transferred or withdrawn, and they have no cash value inside or outside Veridix. Nothing on this platform is a real-money gambling service, and no clause below should be read as offering one.

1. Who we are

Veridix ("we", "us", "the platform") is operated from South Africa at veridix.co.za. Using the platform means you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not create an account.

2. What Veridix is

Veridix is a pari-mutuel prediction platform. People commit points to a forecast of whether a stated question will turn out YES or NO. All the points on a market form one pool. When the market resolves, the pool is shared among the people who were right, in proportion to what each of them committed. New markets take no commission; where an older market does, its rate is shown on its settlement record. Each payout is rounded down to 0.01 points; the remainder (never more than 0.01 per correct position) is kept by the platform and shown on the public audit.

The percentages shown next to a market are not a bookmaker's odds and not a price. They are simply how the pool is currently divided between YES and NO. They move as other people take positions, including after you have taken yours. They are not a prediction by us, and they are not advice — financial, investment or otherwise.

3. Eligibility

We may ask you to verify your identity and age at any time, and may hold or close an account until you do.

4. Your account

5. Points

Points are a scoring device for the trial. To be explicit, because this is the clause people most often assume otherwise about:

6. How markets settle

Every market states, before any stake is placed, the question, the closing date, and the source that will settle it. That source is fixed at the moment the market opens and is recorded in the market's terms hash — it cannot be swapped afterwards for one that gives a different answer. Sources are labelled by kind:

Outcomes are recorded by signers from independent organisations and must reach a quorum. There is then a challenge window, during which anyone holding a position can dispute the outcome (§7), before the settlement is finalised. Every settlement can be re-derived from the raw stakes by anyone, without trusting us, at the public audit. If our arithmetic and the published stakes ever disagree, the audit is the record that matters.

A market may be voided and all stakes returned if the stated source never publishes a usable answer, if the question turns out to be ambiguous in a way its wording cannot resolve, or if it was opened in error. Voiding is a last resort; we do not void a market because the result was unpopular or because it was expensive for us.

7. Disputes

If you hold a position in a market and think its proposed outcome is wrong, dispute it from your account: the market shows the proposed outcome and a Dispute this outcome button while it is open to challenge. Say what you think happened, why, and where you read it. While your dispute is open the market cannot settle. A signer or the operator answers it in writing: if they uphold it, the outcome is proposed and checked again; if they reject it, their reasons are published beside your dispute on the public audit, without your name. After a market has settled, write to the address in §16 quoting the market number, and we will re-derive the settlement and correct it if we were wrong. Decisions on settled by judgement markets are made against the market's wording as published, not against what anyone intended it to mean.

8. Automated agents

The platform provides an agent that can stake on your behalf within a mandate you set. You remain responsible for everything it does under your account. Its mandate is recorded and its decisions are auditable by you. Every limit you set on yourself — including a break under §10 — binds your agent exactly as it binds you.

Automating the platform by any other means (scripting the site, using its API outside a granted mandate) is not permitted without our written agreement.

9. Fair use

Do not: hold more than one account; collude with other accounts to move a pool; stake on a market whose outcome you already know through non-public information, or can influence; attempt to interfere with settlement, the oracles or the audit; probe or attack the platform's security; or scrape it at a rate that degrades it for others.

We watch live markets for patterns that suggest coordination — for example many new accounts taking the same side of one market together, or a large position used to draw others in and then withdrawn. A pattern raises an alert that a person reviews; nothing is done to an account on the alert alone. Where we find abuse we may void the affected positions, reverse the points, and close the accounts involved.

10. Responsible play

You can set limits on yourself at any time from your account — a daily points limit, a reality check, and a break from forecasting. These are enforced by the platform itself, not merely by hiding a button, so they apply to the site, the API and your agent alike.

A break cannot be shortened or cancelled — by you, or by us on your request. It can only be made longer. This is deliberate: a break an impulse can reverse protects nobody. Please choose the length knowing that.

See Responsible play for how each control works and where to get support.

11. Your personal information

We process your personal information under the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

What we hold: your handle and e-mail address; a hash of your password (never the password itself); your authenticator secret if you enable one; any identity details you submit for verification; your point balance, stakes, settlements and account activity; and technical records such as sign-in times and IP addresses kept for security.

Why: to run your account and settle markets (performance of our agreement); to keep the platform secure and to detect abuse and multiple accounts (legitimate interest); and to meet legal obligations where they apply.

Who else sees it: our hosting and infrastructure providers, as processors. We do not sell your personal information or share it for anyone else's marketing.

Public by design: stakes and settlements appear in the public audit without your name or handle. The audit publishes amounts and outcomes so anyone can check our arithmetic; it does not publish who staked what.

Your rights: you may ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to processing — write to the address in §16 and we will respond within a reasonable period. Some records must be retained even after an account is closed, to keep settled markets auditable and to enforce a self-exclusion; where that applies we keep the minimum needed. You may also complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa).

12. Availability and data loss

This is a trial service. It may be unavailable, changed, reset or discontinued without notice. We take regular backups, but you should not treat the platform as a permanent record of anything you rely on.

13. Suspension and closure

We may suspend or close an account that breaches these terms, that we reasonably believe is being used fraudulently or by someone under 18, or where we are required to. You can close your own account at any time by writing to us. Closing an account does not end a break you have set under §10 — a new account opened to get around one is a breach of §4.

14. Liability

The platform is provided as it is. Because no real money can be committed, won or lost, the loss you can suffer from a fault is limited to the points in your account, and points have no monetary value (§5). To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss, for lost profits, or for decisions you take on the basis of anything shown on the platform. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

15. Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. Material changes will be notified in the platform before they take effect. The date below is the version you are reading. Continuing to use the platform after a change means you accept it; if you do not, close your account.

16. Law and contact

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa, and the South African courts have jurisdiction.

Contact: support@veridix.co.za — for account questions, settlement disputes (§7), and data requests (§11).

📄
Not yet reviewed by a lawyer. These terms were drafted for a play-money platform and describe what it actually does today. They have not yet been settled by a legal practitioner. The details still to be completed — registered entity name and number, registered address, and the information officer for POPIA — are deliberately left visible rather than invented.
